Drowning in Plastic

by jessy.lin13@gmail.com
My piece Drowning in Plastic depicts a woman drowning, surrounded in nonrenewable resources. Painting a fish onto the woman's face in order to emphasize the effects of ocean pollution, forcing the audience to feel more concerned about the havoc we are wreaking. By harming the Earth, science will eventually harm mankind. Just like the ocean, the painting is completely filled with plastic bags, soda cans, and plastic wrappers. Due to the amount trash in the ocean, many sea creatures die: fish with oil spills and turtles eating plastic bags thinking they’re jellyfish. For the fish, I used bright warm colors to represent the beauty of this marine wildlife. To contrast the brighter tones, the plastic is used to create a cooler color, representing the sad truth.

Medium: acrylic paint
