Apparently cringe-worthy, what do you think?

This is a forum where you can post your art work and ask what the world thinks. I am looking for general feedback, nothing too technical. A push in the right direction would be appreciated.

Apparently cringe-worthy, what do you think?

Postby insaneanon » Sun Aug 30, 2015 4:40 pm

I drew this a few weeks ago, as practice with digital art and for a friend. I posted it on imgur about 3 days, and was instantly flooded with down-votes and one single comment: "Cringe."
This confused me, as I thought this was a rather good one of my works. What exactly is so bad about it? Thanks for any responses ahead of time.

EDIT: You can really be as technical as you want. I just didn't post it in the other forum because I'm not exactly emotionally prepared for "fury."

I suspect you will not get any other responses to your question. But, since I am to old to really care about what other people think, nor do I have to be nice, nice in order to sell something, I will relay my suspicions. This is a cute little naïve cartoon. I suspect it is seen as pornographic by a self appointed special interest group based in some ideational concept about how human beings should live and what human beings should do with their lives.

Take a look at where imjur is based. Take a look at what imjur considers as acceptable posting. Draw your own conclusions. Nothing can be proved one way or the other. Just consider the source of criticisms before you accept them to be valid.

They don't do that for the drawing itself, they are categorizing you on a certain category of people they dislike for their own reasons without knowing your persona first, which is pretty immature.
And even if they don't appreciate it they could give useful feedback instead.
But they won't, especially on Imgur.
Why? Because that's how it works there, people don't go there in search of art or to be helpful, they just want to get a laugh or two and the way to do it is by insulting each other and then read the comments, It's a completely different world, and not the most indicated for who wants serious feedback or improvement.

At least yours got commented! Mine apparently weren't fun enough so everyone ignored them :C

There is still work to be done and many things to improve of course, but it isn't bad and it's very sweet and innocent. I hope you'll keep posting and progressing!

@ Nadine

How did you become so wise at such a young age? I could say more but not at this time.

I didn't know what imgur was so I looked it up. Why would you post art there? It's not an art sight. It looks to be more of an instant gratification sight. Just a bunch of random crap.
I'll give you a technical critic. Not an emotional. First it's a neat little cartoon. The proportion on it is very good. It looks like you've taken some time to study anatomy a little. I like how you kept it simple from on end of the drawing to the other. One little point. It looks like you started to put some shading in her hair almost giving that part of the drawing a 3D cartoon effect while leaving the rest of the drawing in more of a 2D cartoon effect. But this really doesn't effect the appeal of the piece and since this was only a practice drawing I'd say top to bottom it's very well drawn. Nice little concept.

@Carl, thank you for your words, I appreciate them!

I'm not wise though, I just think that young generations are being overstimulated by our modern fast-paced culture and the never ending stream of information coming from all the new communication medias that surround us, in the end our brain's only choices are either flow with it or go insane.

I can see that in my 2 year cousin, she's like me when I was 4, and that's pretty crazy.

@Eddie

Imgur is indeed an Image Hosting website.
It's like the home for viral images.
Images are usually uploaded there and then posted on websites like Reddit or 4Chan.

There are many reasons artists decide to post there.
For example, if you want your art to get stolen or go viral, or get stolen AND viral then Imgur is for you.

Many artists (mostly strip comedy comic artists or fan art/pop culture artists) actually find imgur very good for sharing their type of content.

I've tested it myself since one of my only fan art works I shared on Reddit got more than 2,000 views in one day and around 8,000 after a couple days.
Anyways that is not for me.

@Eddie
Views and purchases are of course not the same thing. My art site has over thirty thousand views and four scam attempts, but not one purchase. I don't think I will renew it in the spring. I think we have been sold a crock of hewy. I am forming the opinion that it is "overhead" an artist is expected to have as part of a portfolio. I have until April to make up my mind, but the site's continued existence doesn't look good.

@Nadine
From where I am sitting you prove my perception by your comments. At your age you are wise enough to have chosen the right path for yourself and observant enough of the world at large to see the truth. So, I am giving a road sign along the way for you. Do as many realistic landscapes in oil and canvas you can. Landscapes sell, portraits, figures and abstracts do not. Don't look to New York to start your career. Start your career where you stand. YouTube has so many how to paint "anything" it is quite humorous. Find those opportunities present in your own backyard and keep your ears keenly open about how you can increase your opportunities while shining on those who would use you. A two year old cousin tells me you have a large social matrix that can afford you protection and possible direction when needed.

Perhaps the person that posted 'cringe' is against a boy being with a girl that is slightly bigger?
