Fun With Old Glasses

The lenses are still in good shape, but they're way too heavy and I always hated the way they left deep marks on the sides of my nose.....

Then I cut down the rounded lenses to make them small rectangular lenses (reducing the weight by about 2/3) and filed grooves along the sides....

Last is the final bend of a single length of stainless steel wire (about 1/4 the weight of the original frames)....

....along with many slight adjustments for allignment and proper fit....

And they're done! Perfect for the computer, at home reading and watching television, and so light I can barely feel them on my nose, very comfortable really....

....see you later.

And I still have another pair of lenses, it was that Americas Best two pairs for about $70.00 thing.... might get a little more creative with the design of the next pair.

That's very interesting and creative!

Now I know what to do next time I break my glasses and can't afford new ones ;)

Hi ehoeveler, hope you're doing alright....

Hah! I wish! Between taking care of my 89 year old mother and supervising my mildly schizophrenic older brother (we all live together) it's amazing I even have time to think anymore. Not complaining though, family is the best job in the world and I do get a couple of hours of "playtime" every couple of days or so.... that's good enough.

So the testing of the new specks is complete. I wore them for about 10 hours straight and when I finally took them off there were no marks on my nose.... joy.

I might just have a little fun with this (since it only takes a couple of hours to fabricate them). The lenses are easily removed so I could concievably make a variety of frames for the same pair of lenses, plus I still have another set of lenses so I might try a different lens shapes. There's plenty of wire too, I got it from this old stainless steel wire basket I found in the alley when I took out the trash....
