Am I Wrong? Style crisis

Postby ehoeveler » Sat Feb 09, 2013 4:01 pm

I now want to paint exactly like Alexa Szlavics.
I mean, exactly like her. I've always wanted to paint
heaven/space but Alexa 'gets' my vision like no other.
I hate to rip her off but what do I do?
Paint studies of her work and give her credit?
I would be happy to do that - My work wouldn't be EXACtLY like
hers but pretty darn close...Am I wrong to do this?
Thanks, E

i think it's important for an artist to add their own twist, so you can study the way she works and then look at ways to add your own style to it. when the work is done people can see you're heavily influenced by Alexa but they can also identify you as well. i've just looked at her work and it reminds me of Roger Dean.

Hi E!

I think that no matter how hard you try your artworks will never be exactly the same as Alexa Szlavics. Your own style will be your 'fingerprint' in the work. I also agree with what Phil_B says about adding your own twist.

Best of luck E!

I really think that with your own experiences there should be enough of a difference and you would only be stylistically similar. People loving styles and creating in them is how art movements have come and gone. And you never know you might get another strong inspiration somewhere down the line and create art only passingly similar to hers. That’s how we grow as artists by collecting skills, inspirations, and styles. I’m struggling myself with which way I want my art to go stylistically, so I sympathise.
