A watercolor from Arles France

Postby easttexas » Wed Jul 11, 2012 9:11 pm

I ran across this planter box in Arles France. Arles was fascinating as this is where Van Gogh painted close to 300 of his works. In Arles they laid out a Van Gogh trail that connected sites where he painted. Each site was marked with an "Easel" sign that showed the painting from the spot where he set up his easel. I took a photo of some of the sites as they appear today with his actual painting. I posted some of my tour here:

While walking through the town I found this flower box and took a photo. From that photo I created this watercolor.

Arles was a chief Roman outpost in the "barbaric" area of the the western world. The Romans created roads and viaducts, especially the ones over rivers on high bridges that are still functional and beautiful today. Van Gogh never drew or painted any of these Roman artifacts. Why? Hard to say. In the canvas by "east texas", I think it's good, but that the flowered area should be expanded about 300% and that the cemented and bricked are should be proportionately diminshed. This would add to it being a more beautiful picture. Starr, member 7-15

can you provide the photo too... i like the painting a lot... I can tell Van Gogh has influenced you in way. I actually like the fact that the Box is the focal point and not the flowers. too often is in such paintings, the merit of beauty is put on the the florals rather than the whole painting / composition as a whole. As for any suggestions, soften the shadow tones so they are not so hard lined. hard lines in your painting are applied to the stone work, thus should not be applied to light or lack there of. :) good job.
May your world be painted in the
Brightest of colors!
