Chopin medallion

Postby Erika Takacs » Mon Jun 22, 2009 10:05 pm

This is the fourth version of a Chopin medallion I've been working on the last few weeks. The portrait itself is about one and a half inches only. Hope you like.

Very nice Erika! Such great detail! Proportions are fantastic! I can't image working in such a size!
Is the nose reliefed(for lack of better word  ...is it "sticking out" from the relief sculpture...there...now isn't that easy to understand? )? It looks so good! I admire your patience for such exacting, tiny detail.
BRAVO!!

Thanks Barb. Yes, the nose is reliefed (love the term) but only so much, you have to find the right balance, flatten it a little. I guess I passed the patience test, but only after the third try. Sculptors tell me I will learn and grow a lot from this experience, and so I hope.
Perspective is very tricky to figure out, what is raised, what recedes on a flat surface, what is superimposed, and the size itself is a huge challenge.

You do beautiful work Erika. 3D art makes me think too hard lol! I love the expression on both faces. I agree with Byart that your proportions are wonderful and to do it on such a small scale - wow!

Excellent work as always Erika. I like the one with the eyes closed best.

Thank you JD and JJ. Randall, that's my favourite of the three finished pieces too. Tried to capture a moment of inspiration there with the closed eyes, though a tough critic of mine stated it reminded him of a death mask.
