I can't decide whether this is finished or unfinished. It's been sitting in the basement for months now. Handmade paper, rose stem, clay, acrylics. Any ideas? Thanks.

Hi Ericka; Nice work...I'd call it finished if you don't have any solid ideas to change it. Hand made paper is really fun isn't it, like having a ready-made background.

all the best...Bruce

I concur.

It's lovely.

Roses are weird flowers for me...beautiful petals and colours and horrible, spiky lifelines.

Sounds like me! LOL!

Ok, alizaryn, thanks. Sounds convincing.

Bruce, you're right, backgrounds are difficult for me. I got an idea for another one as I was looking at it, just with overgrown thorns.

Nigel, I'm glad you like it for now. Should I title it "Nigel"?

I do like this piece as well... if anything, I would continue the dotty drippy motif up and off the top of the piece to give it a bit more balance. Other than that it is beautiful. I too love hand made paper. Anything where you get your hands in the medium is wonderful.

peace,

Abby

I had no idea, Abby. I don't know if I will ever learn to accurately assess my work. Just when I thought I had made progress in how to. Thanks for the compliment.

very pastorial

With the delicate overall quality in this the stems seem to stand out the most. If I were working on it, I'd probably give the shadow edge of the roses almost as much definition as the stem edges. Of course every artist has their own way of transcribing the world around them and each of them is a valid statement of their own spirit, so take what I say with that in mind.
Other than that it's a really tranquil piece, I like it.

No!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Nigel, after giving it some thought, I deleted the second part of your post. Although very funny, I think this kind of humour may not be appreciated by some members and visitors. Joe is working very hard to make this site accessible to all. Please respect that in the future. I know you understand. Thanks.

Jim, thanks for your wonderful critique. When reading it, I understood the problem I had with this: should I make the rose petals more realistic or not. I think shading might take away the intensity of the red. I want the tension, so I'll leave it as it it. Thanks so much for clearing that up for me.

Krysta, thank you very much. :)

Compositionally speaking, and speaking to the art, it's very good. I cannot tell you what I would think of it were I to see it live, because the picture here suggests that the stems in a real world viewing would overburden the image's internal balance. Hope this makes sense.

Dawn, if you mean they stand out too much, the stems were first split in two and pressed. I think, I hope it can be framed in a regular frame.

I agree, it's looking great so far but it's not done. I can see it having various blues woven through it, mybe around the margins. danny
