My first linocut

Postby Erika Takacs » Thu Oct 09, 2008 10:53 am

Yesterday I was invited to a donor appreciation night at one of the local galleries. We were invited to make linocuts if we wanted to, so I took the opportunity to learn something new.

I was surprised how easily it came to me. And I was shocked it was done in 5-10 minutes. I think I'm hooked. Now I will be able to play with colour, what I miss sometimes with sculpting.

I made a few prints with different coloured inks, and they looked very nice, but unfortunately I lost them somehow. I was told it can be done with acrylics too, so that's what I tried today on ordinary paper. Once I get all the materials needed, I'll be having serious fun! :)

Nicely done Erika. I did this once long ago. It was fun. Keep it up. I am sure you will create amazing pieces.

Shannon, I can't wait to buy the supplies and do more of these.

Mike, the process is very simple. We had ready cut rubber blocks. You can draw the outlines on the block or just start carving directly with small V-shaped chisels. When you're done with carving the block, called matrix, you transfer it to paper. Spread printing ink on glass or plexiglass. Roll the ink on the block. This is where practice is needed. Too much or too little ink will ruin the print. Place a piece of paper on top of block, gently press with your hands, then remove the paper. You need to be careful because the paper tends to shift. All the prints pulled by hand or press are considered originals, but only a limited edition is made. Oh, and the printed version is actually the mirror image of your block.

Glad you enjoyed it, Mike. All it takes is someone show it to you once. It's that simple. :)
Thanks Krysta. I'm pretty sure anybody can do it. I can't wait to make more.
