Art review

Writing an art review is hard work. You need to edit, proofread and weigh every word, every space. Did anyone try it yet?

Here is my first art review, hope you like the art.

I have to write essays for college and I will be serialising one of these over at http://www.nakedgenius.com/art-exposed/ starting in issue 15 next week.

This sort of academic writing is made doubly tough because of all the external referencing you have to do to avoid being labelled a plagiarist, and to prove you have researched the subject and its context.

I still struggle, but i figure the only way to get better is to practice and get feedback from anyone who cares to read it.

I'll drop another note here when the first instalment is on-line.

Erika, I found your review interesting. You appear to enjoy discovering a work for yourself. I wonder do you like to have a commentary from the artist or do you prefer to make your own mind up? I ask because quite often I prefer to not even see the title before I have had time to attach my own story to the image. I am also concerned that titling my own work can limit the range of response I might get from my audience.

Sure, give us the link when the essay is published. I'll read it and give feedback if I have anything meaningful to tell.

Thanks for your feedback. Without any response, I started wondering whether the review was silly or people didn't like the art, or they were just lazy :) . I got permission from the artist to use his name and the pictures, that's all. So I didn't have much to go on, just my own perception. But like you, I also enjoy making up my own stories when looking at art that has a bit of mystery about it. I wanted to write a series of contemporay art reviews, but it's harder than I originally thought. I'm not so sure anymore.

Practice makes perfect. If it was so easy would it be worth doing at all?

Ericka.... I have indeed done approx. 20 reviews/critiques in graduate level Art History while at University of Northern Iowa. The first few were quite daunting to say the least. They are always a lot of work but will become easier as time goes by and you become more familiar with the process.

Be well.... Bruce

Well, the review is not there anymore at the artist's request, who felt uneasy about the whole web-based publicity, even as modest as this one. I, of course am left wondering, was he unhappy about it, although he said he was flattered. Anyway, I decided to stick to dead artists' reviews.
