Pastel portrait of Cara Delevingne. Any good?

Postby ysmfMY » Wed Nov 12, 2014 1:08 pm

Noob here. I'm still new with soft pastels. This is a sketch I'm supposed to do before doing the final product for my final project this semester. I know it looks totally different than the subject picture, but that was my aim, since white-gray-black would look very dull, I added yellow-peach to replace white. Any good?

BTW, what type of art is this classified? Abstract?

I see what you are trying to do and like the color added. But I do have an issue with the final execution. It appears smudgy and rushed. You need to figure out a way to apply the yellow-peach to this without smearing all over the black. It definitely needs to be cleaner and more crisp. This could be very good if you cleaned it up and had more defined shapes.

Agree with Joe on all points but I still like this one - the 'Inner Carla', perhaps
or even the inner you. I think the facial blendings might be serendipitous for a
certain kind of look. However, why don't you try another, starting with black,
leave areas for peach and then come in with the peach - add delicately applied
whites as needed. E
