The Harl Great Dane

Postby BYart » Thu Apr 16, 2009 3:27 pm

Just finished this one of the Harl Great Dane. The harlequin is marked alot like a Dalmation, and can have(permissable in showing), a few merle spots as well. The pinkish pigment on nose is intentional, as most Harls have some amount of pinkish tones on nose and lips.

Acrylic on canvas 11 x 14.

Nicely done Barb! You should be very proud of yourself for this piece. Is this one of your dogs?

Thanks Karen!
No, this isn't one of my Great Danes(I only have Blacks and a Fawn)...I'm doing a series(one per ,of the six allowable colors of the Great Dane standard) for the Canadian Great Dane Club. They will be auctioning these paintings at their annual Regional Specialty show in Sept.
So, this is a representative of the Harl colored Great Dane. I've already done one of the Black, Blue and the Fawn...still lack two more...the Mantle(marked like a Boston Terrier), and the Brindle.
Thanks for viewing and your nice comment.

Thanks E!
Harl is one of the most popular Great Dane colors, as it is very striking on this large
eed.

I love painting animals and its not easy to capture the personality and beauty of these lovely creatures. You did a great job capturing the warmth of this great dane. Keep up the good work

Another excellent portrait, Barb. I can see how you're trying to show the Danes' personality too, and that's a bonus. This one looks almost humane, actually.

Thank you! By far, the Great Dane's personality and gentleness has captured my heart years ago. Though I have a soft spot for all dogs, this
eed(having been owned by them...lol), I have been blessed to know, love, show and care for for almost 40 years now! GOSH...I'm getting old! :D

Thank you Erika! Your input is always important to me as you have such an ability of your own that I admire. I am striving to reach higher in my work, and I thank you for recognizing that attempt. Much appreciated.

Generally speaking, I know that some artist's, don't feel that a pet(in my case mainly dogs) portrait artist achieves much when painting a portrait(and yes...I mean one that can paint them well). However, it is much more difficult and challenging than one might think, as it isn't only the coloring of the fur, structure, etc. that needs to be portrayed. As any pet owner knows, each is unique and comes with their own expressive personalities and little quirks! And capturing those 'details' in a pet portrait is definately what makes it very challenging...and my passion! :)

Good Morning

Postby Michael Ortega » Fri Apr 17, 2009 7:33 am

I like this painting. Elegant and heartfelt. The only problem I have with it is the background. It is just a little too monochromatic for my exotic tastes... :P ...either way it works. Good Job!

I wanted the dog to stand out...but as I was doing the painting I worried over my choice of background colors. I was trying to do a gradient of black to white...but my black needs to be darker. Of course the original is better reflecting the colors...my photography skills and camera are lacking :)
