Hey Mike

Postby rrsum » Sat Nov 07, 2009 10:29 am

Hi Mike,
Nice use of light playing on the trees. Your style is very loose and impressionistic and you can do some wonderful things with that style.

Since you asked for feedback - I think composition is anyone's biggest challenge when it comes to painting landscapes. They can be trickier than most people think. A lot of things come into play.

Planes, perspective, values, negative space, etc...We've all struggled with those elements at one time or another when painting landscapes.

If I were to make any suggestion, it would be to work on more value changes from the back of your painting to the foreground to give your paintings depth.

There are some great books available on painting landscapes. I've found most of my books at used book stores and saved a bunch of money. They've helped me tremendously in my landscape compositions.

Keep up the great work Mike! Best to you.

Mike, you're right, ask a decent price for them. Enter juried shows too in your area to let your work known. Rental galleries are ok I guess, but also look into galleries that carry traditional, landscapes and realistic art, I know there are quite a few here in Ontario. They're not in the big cities, they're mostly up North, and the works sell for very good prices.

Hi Mike,

I like this one a lot. I think it's my favorite that you did. Such great color and the light that comes into it is wonderful!!!

Beautiful work.

Where are you doing your shows at? I wish you the best of luck. I agree that you can't give your paintings away. Someone once told me that they were asked "how long did it take you to paint that?" Reply was "20 years....I started painting 20 years ago, you'll get 20 years of experience with this painting along with qualtiy workmanship and product."

Cheers,

Julie

Mike,

There is now way you can paint "Crap" even if you tried on purpose to do it. You are far too talented for that.

I agree with Rich about the values to add depth. But I love this painting and I sure do enjoy viewing your work.

I have to tell you, I'm struggling with teaching myself how to paint. I get so disappointed when it doesn't turn out the way I intended. There are many times when I want to just throw my paints and
ushes away!

It's going to take me several years to get half as good as you.

Best of luck in the show.

Had to come back in and tell you what i think about this in more detail Mike.
First of all, I LIKE the subtle value changes, I think it is unique to your work, like a signature style!
I think the mystical quality that i see in this painting is far more intriguing to me, than the exactness of value created depth.
Not arguing with others input, just putting in my 2 cents.
As I've said before of your recent work Mike, it has a dream-like quality instilled by the light you have portrayed, and no...I wouldn't change a thing!
Every artist is different, and that is what makes each one of us unique, and this my friend, is a wonderful unique style. I could recognize your work anywhere! It's uniquely yours!
Keep being you Mike, and painting what is in your heart, it is wonderful! :D
