Digital painting of Jupiter

Postby Teknowizard » Fri Jul 27, 2007 3:10 pm

This is a digital painting of Jupiter that I finished today. I use a filter in photoshop that helps me create a black & white globe and then using Hubble shots for reference, freehand painted using a trackball (too poor for a pressure sensitive tablet). The stars and distant galaxy are painted, using two star map softwares I have to make it accurate as I possibly can with somewhat bad eyesight. The original will be for my own wall but will be selling limited edition canvas prints and cropped for open edition prints.

Yes, this one is more like a painting. I read with interest your description of the technical aspects of your creating a digital painting. It's a great insight for someone who doesn't know a whole lot about it. Wonderful. Erika

Thanks Erika.

I kinda figured an artwork of Jupiter was self descriptive so I describe how I approach such a piece instead. I thought maybe it might help other artists that might have a desire to do something like this. I like to shift back and forth from the fractals to more normal digital art so that I don't get artist block. I even do photo manipulations when I find a photo I like and the photographer gives me permission to use one or more of his/her pictures. I'll attach an example: Trail In the Snow at Dusk - based on a photo by Michael Citrini, an employee of Lone Mountain Ranch. I'm also doing some by two Australian Storm Chasers that have given me permission - Michael Bath & Michael Thompson (run a search for lightning photo and you'll find them).

It's hard to work Digital to paint. You have to capture the sharpness
when needed and the hazy when needed. Your planet is an excellent
start but honestly it looks like you took the Digital and painted
right over it. Hard to explain. Forgive me if I'm wrong. E

All of mine are digital. I was in a car accident 15 years ago and can no longer paint. I did air
ush primarily before that but my hands are so shaky that I don't even try to sketch anymore. So I've spent about ten years learning how to do digital art.

Randall, I and a few others have little understanding of digital work. It a very good thing indeed that your finding a way to do your art work. There are a lot of people who become disabled and give up. You are not one of those people. As Bod armstrong use to say, It,s not the man in the fight, It,s the fight in the man. Your work looks very good. I am one of those old timers that just don,t understand the concept of digital art work. However I can see how important it can be. And in that I am a little closer in understand it. I wish you the very best of luck.
Perfection is what drives an artist.
The inability to achieve perfection is what creates a work of art.

Thanks John,

I don't really have a choice but to keep fighting/trying. What I get for disability (SSI) is barely enough for rent, utilities, gas for my truck and part of the groceries for a month. I have both physical & mental disabilities so about the only thing I can do is work on my art, work hard to do the best I can and hope somehow it is enough to somehow build a life for myself some day.

Fantastic Jupiter! And I can understand why you would want the original on your wall. And have no doubt that the limited editions and open prints will sell well!

No offense taken Ehoeveler. Funny thing is my planets when I did air
ush turned out the same way. I did one very much like this one on a Semi trailer about 20 years ago along with the Battlestar Galactica (original series) and several viper & cylon fighters.
