Re: Acrylic or Oil

I do paint primarily with acrylics, but also mainly for practical reasons... I just don't have adequate ventilation or safe drying space for oil work... the vibrancy and opacity variations between different acrylic colors is a bit frustrating, especially since I strive to use vivid, high-contrast co...

Re: Bipolar II Disorder

I know about bipolar disorder from my psychology studies, no personal experience... as I recall, it's a cyclical condition rather than a chronic illness, in that it tends to be a period of alternating highs and lows rather than a constant state... as for my personal opinion of people with the condit...

Re: No Focus

Hello. Here are some things I have tried, when I have felt this way: You might try carrying a pocket-sized sketchbook and a pencil around with you. Some of my sculpture and drawing ideas were sketched out while I was at the doctor's office for a check-up, or during my lunch break (the lettuce and ma...

Re: Anyone recognize this?

hello. can't help you identify the artist per se, but this looks extraordinarily like a painting in my grandmother's living room, from the color scheme and textural brushstrokes to the arrangement of the trees and stream... I'm wondering if this artist is (or was) one of those types that made a livi...

Re: Stained Glass Japanese Dragon

way cool! i love dragons, so i've got a completely biased perspective, haha... i agree about the hand/claw issue but the big claw kind of looks like a crescent moon, which i think is interesting... just my thoughts...

Lighting issues with photographing paintings...

Hey, I'm having some real trouble getting pictures of some of my paintings. I'm getting a lot of glare/reflected light from the camera flash (or any strong light source in the vicinity). When I turn the flash off, the picture turns out so dark and blurry that I can't use it (and photo-editing to com...

Re: trying to figure out what i have here

Here's a link to a site that might help.... the guy who runs the site offers to help identify signatures not in the database on his site, if you email him a copy of the picture. http://identifyartistsignatures.com/mystery-signatures/ Or, there's a guy called John Castagno who's apparently the leadin...

Re: Honest critique wanted

I like the inky, stained-glass look you get with these pieces, and I especially like the stormy seas and the silver fox, I think because the black lines and shapes contrast so well with the softer, more blended shapes in the colored areas. ... I think the head of your 'native dancer' is a little sma...

Anyone else getting washed out?

Pennsylvania's turning into the Everglades over here... and Knoebels Amusement Resort is basically a giant lake now... Anybody else getting washed out to sea? Or otherwise teamed by Mother Nature?

I'm back.... whew!

Hey, all... once again returning from my summer workaholic phase... should start to have a proper presence around here again in a week or so as I settle back into my college schedule. Wow, this site went through a radical update... I'll have to do some poking around to get a sense of it again... loo...

 :D Having done a few pictures in stippling, I can really appreciate the amount of work that must have gone into this. I'm guessing it's too big to scan it, yes? That usually gave me the clearest results, so the dots were visible... maybe you could just do a close-up of a smaller section of t...

They look beautiful! The grey mare is definitely closer to photorealism in terms of style... I like them both, though.

Interesting thoughts, E_B_A. I'd like to do a series of these; I was able to throw these together quickly enough to suit acrylic, which is all I can use when I'm not in the studio. If I do, I'll be experimenting a lot with different colors, so the idea of working with secondaries appeals to me, sinc...
