Re: "The Martyr" work in progress

Great series of photos. I like the top (first) one since it reveals sort of how you're working with the reference photos and such. Beautiful painting, PX!

Re: John Malkovich, Actor

Thank you, Jenn. Was working on John earlier today. It is slow but kind of happy exploit : ) The way I am working is slow and might appear tedious to any onlooker, but I figure if I am adding something that helps, and do it enough, I will have a nice big image of a very brilliant and original 'thesp...

Re: Forgotten - oil on canvas

I have nothing but love for birds without wings. Sorry to hear of your recent challenges. I like this picture. I'm sure there are zillions of versions of similar themes, but this one fees more genuine than 99 % of them.

Re: Hello! I am new and would love feedback!

Initially the subject, at best, might be about sensuality and human sensitivity and relationship, but the apparent claw marks- and its 'gold' -are violent and contradictory to the initial photo. As is always the case, I cannot know your motives or intent, but this image is not pleasant to me. Normal...

Re: Latest Painting (slight nudity)

Man! I must be careful not to ask such involved questions. Your response is so consummate and elaborate- and is very much appreciated! I also like Lady of the Lake, and feel you improved it with those later additions. Your work habits are interesting and inspirational. Do you have a list of models f...

Re: John Malkovich, Actor

Thanks a lot, Carl. Some of the boldness may be John himself : ) This painting is yet to be done, of course, and it's 30 inches high, so is taking time. Plus I am allowing myself to work on numerous other unfinished pictures, but John is my most recent 'start'.

"Cirque de la Vie"

Often 'improvisation' is regarded to occur 'in the moment', but many of my pictures are improvised over time. I have called this, in French, "Circus of Life". That is Dali in the sky juggling planets. I guess this canvas was a playground for me. Painting is fun.

Re: Self Taught

Hi Yoli. I hope you continue to draw and paint. I think you are showing great aptitude and suspect you have a whole lot to share/give to others.

Re: Practice & Post - Still life

This still life was done years ago, when I first retreated to the small town my Mom lived in. Where I was, I had few possessions but I needed something to paint, so I put stuff onto a chair and began. The face in the picture is my Mom in the 1940's. For those who are learning and teaching themselves...

Re: Composition Question...

Hi Pooch. I sure do not agree with Carl or your wife, at all. Since they are there, and that is what you are seeing and painting, why on earth would you remove them? They look just fine to me. If you took them out there would be nothing left to " balance" but a lateral line of distant tree...

Re: Latest Painting (slight nudity)

Hi PainterX (John?)- I see your skillful array of paintings at your gallery and I am wondering how you arrive at your subject material. Where do you get models, dresses etc, if I may ask. Every now and then my inclinations return to Pre-Raphaelite type subjects, but other than copying ( attempting t...

Re: Latest Painting (nudity warning)

Hi Painterx- I love that you are innovating, constructing, devising this picture- which suggests that you could devise most anything that may arise in you. ( I know it's not easy, but that's the fun of it!) I think it is almost impossible that the color of the young woman wouldn't appear substantial...

Re: You ever lost your artistic abilities?

Hi chirchri. You don't feel like you can, and if you don't pick up a brush or a pencil, you will not. Why not do it anyway. You might consider its benefit as improving your creative language so that if you are again depressed, you will be more equipped to cope with it, to plow your way through it. I...

Re: What is the reason why you initially like painting?

Honestly, it seems that a large part of it was that it presented me with the opportunity and the "power" to re-create some of what I was confronted with in the world. Images typically appeared on t.v. or in magazines and I had to wonder how they came about. I imitated them with colored pen...

Re: "Primal Instincts" My work in progress.. Critique pleas

Since the title of this piece, so far, is Primal Instincts, I wouldn't want to affect those instincts as you proceed to finish it! Looks good so far... : )
