About Me:
From my childhood backyard "clothesline exhibitions" to my schooling at Moore College of Art in Philadelphia, PA and career in graphic design, art has always been integral in my life. I attended Moore's Young People's Workshops and Saturday Programs while in high school where my exhibition won a scholarship and I attended Moore as an advertising major. I then worked for 32 years in commercial graphic arts.
As a graphic designer and art director, my pursuit of passion became a job of deadlines and restraint. Uninspired, I settled for constructing commercially pleasing products and shelved my pursuit of crafting, creating and inspiring. Retired, I have rediscovered my passion and have been exploring different media such as charcoal, pastel, oil pastel, oil painting and watercolor as well as rekindling my love for photography.
Now, with my rediscovered passion for creating fine art, I have discovered the beauty and versatility of colored pencil. My award winning colored pencil work has been fulfilling in ways creating commercial art never could.
Colored pencil is new to me, I have been working with this medium for the last 4 years and is my primary medium; it suits my style of photo-realism well. I work from sketches and photographs from my frequent journeys and explorations. From the excitement of embarking on a hunt for subjects, setting up still lifes, to the color mixing, layering and burnishing, working on a piece gives me peace and fulfillment. I get lost in the hours when I'm working.
I mainly use Prismacolor Colored Pencils and have added Faber-Castell Polychromos and Derwent Coloursoft and Studio Pencils to my supply. I like to work on Legion Stonehenge Vellum paper and if the piece calls for a highly burnished finish I use Strathmore 500 Series 2-Ply Plate Bristol. Lately I have been experimenting with Art Spectrum Colorfix Coated Pastel paper, which I like a lot, and Stonehenge Museum board.
I am a member of The Colored Pencil Society of America, and Fleisher Art Memorial. I have won first place for drawing in juried shows at Fleisher and The Manayunk Art Center.
