"My focus has been on developing a soft, tonalist atmosphere in my landscape paintings and carrying those attributes over into my figurative landscape paintings. I have enjoyed playing with overlapping design elements to combine figures with their surroundings. It is a continuously moving target to achieve a balance between the figure and landscape because the emphasis is on both. As these paintings develop, they become increasingly allegorical. I have been focusing on transitional moments in both landscapes and in life: springtime, dawn, motherhood and self reflection. Ideally, I want my paintings to represent moments of a more universal story. Rather than a literal rendering, my intention is to combine elements to create visual poetry that is open to interpretation. I want people to relate to a painting in a way that is personal to them. These paintings are such a joy for me because of the challenge. No matter how much preplanning I do, I have to be actively engaged and open to new directions that might present themselves. The "ideal" is elusive, but each piece brings me closer and refines my direction. It makes for a fantastic journey!"

Lisa Larrabee is a fine artist painting and teaching in her hometown of Tucson, Arizona. She returned to Tucson after graduating first in her class with an excellent education from the Kansas City Art Institute. Lisa has also earned a Master of Education and is currently teaching watercolor, oil and acrylic painting classes at Pima Community College which she thoroughly enjoys.

Portraiture has always held a special interest for her. She loves the challenge of combining accuracy and observation with the intangible qualities of each individual subject. Lisa’s love of the portrait was enhanced by the birth of her twin boys. Painting them was such a personal and gratifying experience. It deepened her understanding of the significance of having a portrait painted.

Although Lisa began working as a traditional portrait artist, she found inspiration in the colors, patterns and moods of landscapes. She began experimenting with combining portraits and landscapes in ways that manipulated boundaries and allowed for similar patterns, colors and values to merge.

While developing these landscape inspired portraits, Lisa also began focusing specifically on landscape painting. Her landscapes often capture a sense of atmosphere, rich color and lost edges typical of Tonalism. Other paintings focus on the repeating patterns and negative spaces of trees. Some, are a combination of both.

As her series of landscape paintings develop, so do her figurative landscapes. These paintings imply a connection, both physically and symbolically, between the figure and their surroundings and are increasingly allegorical. Lisa’s working process is evolving, but her direction is clear, “I want to create an elegant, ethereal quality that translates into a form of visual poetry.”
