Portraits Call For Entries

Art Contest

Deadline: Monday, May 20

A portrait is meant to capture the essence of the subject. However, despite all details being in plain sight, a portrait can also raise a great deal of questions; What does that smile mean? What kind of person are they? Mischievous? Lighthearted? From their facial expression to telltale scars, from their wardrobe to what they hold- these are cryptic symbols left for the viewer to ponder and attempt to decipher. For this online art exhibition, we’re looking for portraits, both in traditional and non-traditional styles and mediums, that communicate about the subject being portrayed. How will you present your subject? All international artists, professional and amateur and all art mediums will be considered in this call for entries from photography to wall sculpture, fabric, mixed media, all paintings and drawings including, oil, acrylic, pastels, ink, graphite, etc. Work must be able to be hung on a wall to be considered. Sizes up to 12 feet are acceptable. Video submissions will be displayed online only. Accepted entries for this online exhibition will be judged again for a collective live exhibition at our Pasadena Gallery. The artists will be asked if they wish to submit their artwork for the collective exhibition, which is not a requirement to being a part of the online exhibition. read more

Featured Art Tips & Tutorials

Tutorial: Fur Texture in Graphite

This tutorial describes the techniques I use to create realistic fur texture in graphite pencil. To make your own drawings you will need paper and a full drawing set of art quality graphite pencils. In this illustration I predominantly used 3B and 5B pencils, due to the small size of the drawing. The same technique can be used with a larger range of pencils, and on a large piece I will use everything from HB to 6B. Each has a different hardness and tone, allowing the artist to create shading with tremendous depth and detail. view tutorial here

Experimenting with Color Triads and Schemes

When I first started painting, I bought many tubes of paint and relied heavily on "convenience" mixes in lieu of mixing my own colors. I felt that color theory was not only boring but over-rated. I could not have been more wrong. view tutorial here

Painting Realistic Fabric

Painting realistic fabric with many folds and twists is a matter of observation and patience. It is an exercise that starts by finding the darks and the lights and ends by bringing them together. view tutorial here
